“Dramatic hair changes seem to be seasonal’”, says stylist Shelly Aguirre. “The most radical changes happen in the Fall and Spring.”

Cornrows can add a fun and edgy element to your look! We’re seeing modern cornrow braids all over the runway as well as in celebrity culture and now is truly the cornrow’s time to shine. Cornrow braids are an easy, non-committal way of achieving an edgier style.

We've all seen the long hair with one side of the head shaved - Ellie Goulding or Rihanna for example, but it’s not for everyone. At least not long-term. Adding the cornrows to the side gives you the fun without the worry of having to spend the next year trying to grow that look out. For example, celebrities like Jennifer Aniston or the Kardashians.

 

 

 On the runway, designers like Kenneth Cole had a chic, double cornrow half-up style reminiscent of the funky pop-rock icon Gwen Stefani.

 

 

One of my favorite looks is the accented part as seen with the Australian design Suboo. It adds a fun, eye-catching element to that down, beachy wave, or for someone with that straight hair that's hard to maintain long-lasting style. Cornrows are a great alternative and step above the "pretty" or "Boho" braids that we have seen over the past few years.

With summer upon us and weekend beach trips, family getaways, boat journeys and more coming up, it’s time for women to learn about easy options for maintaining

Stylist Ramona Villanueva has all sorts of styling suggestions from pre-trip cuts, morning routines and more while out and about for summer travels, with minimum fuss.

According to Ramona, the biggest thing to remember is to embrace your natural hairpattern and accentuate it.

Below are some of Ramona’s secret tips and insider suggestions that can be followed to ensure that you are spending more time having fun on vacation and less time worrying about their hair. 

Control naturally curly hair by enhancing it using lightweight moisturizing crème
products to tame frizz. You can re-twist strands easily and quickly before diffusing or air-drying. Rake and shake with hands to make big or pat down for a subdued
look, then, mist with a light-hold hairspray to keep curls in place. For second (or
even third) day hair, revive curls by sprinkling water on hair, then raking through
moisturizing product and re-twisting strands with your fingers.

Wavy or semi-straight hair - on freshly shampooed, damp hair, apply a generous
amount of mousse on the root to mid lengths. Spray texturizing beach spray all over,scrunching hair or twisting strands to promote the natural wave. Then, either
diffuse or air-dry. Rake hands through when dry, upside down, to shake it out and
get great volume. Mist with medium-hold hairspray for a longer lasting hold. For
second day hair, use Kerastase VIP volume in powder allover, work the scrunching
technique, and go!

Bone straight hair? A Mason Pearson brush is perfect for keeping locks looking
fresh, especially when spending time in a windy environment, like on a boat or at
the beach. Either rock your hair smooth the way its meant to be or with freshly
shampooed damp hair, twist sections of hair into buns or braid them to sleep on.
Then in the morning, brush out, spray with a medium-hold hairspray and shine
spray for a longer, shimmery hold. For second or third day hair, continue to either
re-bun or re-braid hair at night and in the morning, shake and brush your hair out,
apply dry shampoo at the roots and beach texture spray on the ends for body and
hold. Scrunch and go!

Also, before a big trip, or at the start of vacationing season, women may want to consider a shorter cut, like a bob. Shorter hair is quicker to style, plus it shows off the neck, offering a fresh look and feel.

Stylist Evan Roberts is loving “The Lob” right now and thinks every gal should too. The Lob, or long bob, is the “it” haircut right now and is the perfect balance between long and short.

If commitment to short hair scares you, The Lob is a great compromise. Evan loves this cut because it allows you to free yourself from unnecessary length without taking the plunge completely. It’s the best of both worlds.

Fine to thick, wavy to straight, The Lob works with so many different hair types. By choosing the correct length, you can cater to any face shape too. Bobby pins are known worldwide to nearly every woman as a great tool for our hair. Sometimes we even use them for other things; paper clips, nail art, whatever we need in those “Macguyver” moments in life.

However, their original purpose is always best. We keep them around and rely on them for our ability to tweak (yes, tweak, not twerk!) or transform our look where ever and whenever. Here are a few reminders to refresh our take on why we love this tiny pin so much.

1. The proper way to use bobby pins are wavy side down, as the ridges offer the security to keep the pin in place. One huge misconception by bobby pin users.
2. To help with slippery, straight, or baby fine hair. Spray the bobby pins with hairspray, texture spray, or dry shampoo before (let them dry before using). This will add a little grit to the pin, which will assist you in keeping the pin in place.
3. Show them off! Expose your pin or pins on purpose. Whether it is placed organically or in a very intricate design or pattern, embrace this long standing trend. Fashion designers do this for high-end runway. Celebs for looks from daytime to red carpet. So get to it, be creative!
4. Sometimes one can do all the work for you. Other times, don't forget that there is strength in numbers. For example, to anchor a large bun, securing a French twist using two pins to interlock is all that is necessary.
5. Quickies, as in 10 to 60 seconds:

• A Pompadour: Grab the triangular section of hair on the very top of your head, giving it a twist or fold-over, then nudging it forward slightly and secure with a bobby pin.
• A front twist or braid: Start off in the center of the front of your hair. Do a braid or twist and secure with a pin.
• Fake a fuller pony: Lift your ponytail up, then tease or backcomb lightly at the base. Insert a bobby pin or two and show off a fuller pony in a matter of moments.
• Turn your post gym look into a chic topknot. One or two pins are all you need!
• Go half up as you scoop up the hair over your ears toward your crown and secure. Positioning it multiple ways for a variety of looks. Sleek, Boho, or anything in between.

Let us not take this beauty go-to for granted. After all, it holds a lot of power!

Platinum blonde hair color is back in a big way, and colorist Rex Jimieson thinks it will continue to shine for months to come. New color tones are constantly coming back in vogue, and Rex thinks this hue is so in right now.  Originating in film noir and coming back during the 80’s punk rock era, and nothing says Hollywood glamour or rock star like platinum! Platinum is making a big statement again and will be one of the top hot colors in 2014 and into 2015.

Platinum comes in many variations from natural to supernatural, and Rex’s favorite platinum is not brassy, but maintains a subtle blonde tone, as opposed to going grey or white. Some of his favorite celebrity examples include Margot Robbie, Anna Faris, Miley Cyrus, Michelle Williams, and Yolanda Foster. Since platinum is such a dramatic hue, the haircut and styling must also be strong – think pixie, pompadour, undercut, a-line bob, or if worn longer, a heavy bang is a must.

Yolanda Foster's California blond look went from commonplace to a favorite after cropping it into a chin length bob.

Gatsby and 80's fashion influence have brought a fair amount of platinum to the spring runways, but more than that, its comeback has a lot to do with the newest haircut trends. Volume, undercutting, and heavy bangs look great with bright, even, strong colors.

Platinum is not to be attempted at home, and women considering this move should seek a professional color specialist. Going in with an open mind, a colorist will determine whether its right for you, and what is possible based on your length of hair, natural color, and any existing dye or color residue from previous looks you have worn.

Most hair color looks better with variation, deeper in the root area and brighter through the mid lengths and ends, but platinum looks best when it is consistently bright throughout. If you won't be able to achieve consistent brightness from roots to ends it may be necessary to tone your root area deeper. This will compensate for old color residue which can be hard to lift out of the mid lengths and ends of your hair.

One must also commit to regular maintenance of platinum hair. Double process bleach and tone is one of the roughest on the condition of the hair so expect in-salon treatments as well as professional products and masques at home to maintain the hair’s integrity and prevent breakage. Wrapping your hair in a silk scarf for sleeping will prevent excess friction, which can cause breakage in the crown and sides. A re-touch is recommended about every three weeks, but no more than four in order to avoid color banding in the mid length.

Hair above the shoulder or shorter is ideal for platinum blond and anyone going there with longer hair needs to be naturally light so that lightening can be done gently with single process and/or highlighting.  A blue-violet shampoo will help maintain the tone of your platinum to allow for minimal or no color pull through at your retouch visit.

It’s time to twist and shout! Braids, buns and ponytails are great, but twists are the perfect way to sass up your hair for any occasion. Stylist Ramona Villanueva not only loves giving clients fabulous twists at the salon, but also knows just what tips are needed for women to re-create these wound-up looks at home. You can twist hair back, up, down and across to achieve gorgeous looks; tease and texture hair for looser, bohemian twists; and even incorporate bangs. 

Before experimenting with various techniques, there are three main styles of twists that Ramona suggests every gal should master.

Classic Side Twist

An individual twist taken from either side of your part for a classic look. This is achieved by taking a section of hair, back combing the base, twisting, and securing for more height.

 

Gather ‘N Twist

You can twist the hair back or up, but while twisting, feed hair in as you go. Keep twisting for a “rolled hair” effect. It’s even easy to twist all of your hair up and off the neck for a romantic updo.

 

 

Two Strand Twist

This is a twist with detail and a more complex appearance. Start with two strands and wrap them around each other. Once you’ve wrapped one strand around the other, keep adding hair to each strand and work your way in the direction you’d like the twist to go. Secure with a bobby pin or twist right into a pony.

Tone on tone dimension is the solution to boosting an ultra blonde, creating softness and buttery colors like Carey Mulligan. Heidi Klum also showcases maple and honey lowlights in her blonde hair, giving her tresses movement with natural tones mixed in.

Pixie Blondes

This popular combination is hot in Hollywood right now – Jennifer Lawrence and Miley Cyrus both exhibit stellar cuts that let loud color do the talking. While this trendy pixie haircut is bold on its own, what really accentuates this look is a complementing blonde color, which takes the style to a whole new level. Go edgy with a double process or work wonders by tapering highlights into a darker bottom like Miley. Her ‘do begins bleached out and slowly softens to a more natural hue.

Strawberry Gold

To bring warmth into a blonde head of hair, make the move to a strawberry gold. Mixing in subtle shades of red won’t overpower the blonde, but can transform a drab hue into a softer look. Laura Dern changed her blonde to a beautiful strawberry all-over color with golden honey balayage worked through. Leslie Mann’s strawberry and rose gold tones are effortlessly flattering.

 

Seal and Shine

Sealing any blonde with Dia Light (luminous semi-permanent gel-creme hair color without ammonia) glosses and gussies up any hue. From simply clear for extra shine to actual tones, such as honey or strawberry, this service is fast, easy and custom-formulated to each client. Not looking to warm up? Cooler, ice tones can be selected as well. Blondes naturally have less shine than brunettes, and any of these choices will add shine and seal in existing color. Many blonde manes, like Blake Lively’s, require a glossing treatment every 5 – 6 weeks!

For all of the awards received this season for Dallas Buyer’s Club, Jared Leto has been receiving just as much attention for his hair as he has for his talent.

This is to be expected, and Colorist Leslie Shores just can't take her eyes off his luscious locks! He may be an edgy rock star (30 Seconds to Mars front man), but it is refreshing to see a man with such nice hair wearing Ombré, or what Leslie likes to call “Manbre”. Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt have attempted this at times, but they didn't quite hit the mark like Jared.

Leslie attributes Jared’s ability to show off this “Manbre” look like no one ever has before because he truly knows how to rock a wave to complement the coloring. Even when he's not wearing his “Maves” though (man waves), he is sporting a “Mun” or “Man Bun” which looks equally as cool.

If someone wants to achieve this Oscar-winning look, Leslie would get right to work with Balayage. She foresees many of her fashion-conscious male clients heading into the salon with pictures of Jared Leto now (more fitting than Lily Aldridge). He is the new Ombré… or shall we say “Manbre”?
