The secret's out: hair looks better when it's not shampooed every day. Less frequent shampooing means you can make styling products work for you in better ways, according to stylist Rae Hernandez.

Hair becomes bulky when products are in it, which means hair has more texture. The new generation of styling products are made with ingredients that don't flake. Many of these products subtly add bulk and keep hair pliable, not stiff. These products also have a "style memory," which reactivates with wet fingertips or steam from the shower. Hernandez likes Kérastase and Shu Uemura.

There's another reason to cleanse hair less often: Every time we shampoo, the hair cuticle opens and some color escapes. Less shampooing means hair color stays vibrant longer. Less cleansing also means less dryness and less frizzies. And we know how important this is during winter!

So, experiment to find your own comfort zone when skipping shampoo – a good time to try this is over the weekend. Some people can go three or four days without shampoo; others feel better with just two days in between cleansing.
