Thor Nygren

The idea that stylist Thor Nygren is named for a hammer-wielding god of thunder is pretty entertaining — spend a few minutes just chatting with Thor and you’ll see why. You'll start to feel a little lighter, a little more at ease, thanks to the bizarre, zen-like bubble that floats with the stylist through even the most stressful of days. Now, spend a full appointment with Thor—what Thor calls ‘the whole experience’—and tell us how you feel.

A Ten-Minute Scalp Massage? Yes, Please.

That’s right, an appointment with Thor includes a ten-minute, post haircut scalp massage for every client. “It started at the shampoo bowl, many moons ago,” says Thor in his classically dulcet tone of voice, “I could feel the energy on my clients’ scalps, feel that there were highly charged areas, and as I massaged the scalp, I could feel things balancing out.”

Watching his newly rejuvenated clients, he decided to move his behind-the-bowl practice behind the chair, and with study of massage therapy, it’s now a permanent part of his client ritual. “It’s my gift to the universe—every 45 minutes, I send out a calm wave of energy.”

Thor + Vidal Sassoon

Fresh from school, Thor opened his own salon at the age of 23. Five years later he sold his salon in one of those magnificent now-or-never moments, moving to Chicago to work for Vidal Sassoon. He began as an assistant, making minimum wage, and moved his way up into management, working under—funnily enough—Maxine! “It wasn’t a place you worked at for the money. You went for the education and the opportunities it provided.”

“I never wanted to be mediocre,” says Thor, “I didn’t want to be that hairdresser in the suburbs—I wanted to feel that I was always on the cutting edge. I wanted to be the best of the best.” His desire to be the best was what drew him to Vidal Sassoon—the quality, the art, and the level of training.

Artistic Freedom—Do Whatever You Want!

“The consultation is so important, probably the most important part of the service,” says Thor. So, when a client sits down and says, Do whatever you want!, Thor starts by asking what his client doesn’t want. “Then they’ve got a long list,” he laughs, “People may not know what they want, but they always know what they don’t want.”

“The scissors are not going to open with a hope—as in, ‘I hope we’re speaking the same language,’” says Thor. He knows that he needs to ask the right questions and, when available, rely on visuals to get a better grasp of what the clients want.
