Maxine Salon has created a customized modern version of the perm that gives clients beachy waves year round. Yup, we said it – perm! Balay Wave is a cutting-edge process that provides soft, loose waves. Says creator and Maxine Salon stylist Jason “Rex” Jimieson, “Unique spongey rollers that we refer to as noodles are used to customize the size of the curl and the focal point of the lift. The ‘noodle’ helps to prevent breakage.”

Like Balayage, placement varies from mid-length to ends, with some closer to the scalp giving the curls a natural appearance. There is no “line” of demarcation so the look grows out gracefully. Balay Wave is also safe for most chemically treated hair (except for ultra-high-lift blondes). According to Rex, “The technique is ideal for medium length hair; longer is ok but it must be substantially layered, it is after all a perm technique and needs to be light in the interior to show movement and bounce.”

The new wave is all about texture. It creates a boost that in turn gives hair an elevated sense of volume. The once admired stick straight look has taken a step forward – women now have their sights set on waves of various lengths and textures. Rex admits, “Balay Wave is the perfect solution for someone who changes her haircut often but has run out of ideas on new shapes and would like to add texture for summer. It’s ideal for the active woman who wants to air dry and have a fabulous look. Hot off the beach!”
