What You Need to Know About Targaryen Blonde Hair, Inspired by HBO’s House of Dragons

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few months, you’ve likely seen—or heard—of House of Dragons, the new HBO prequel to the uber-popular series, Game of Thrones. House of Dragons has also been the root (see what we did there?) of a new hair trend that’s taking over TikTok: Targaryen Blonde hair.

While this icy blonde hue is undoubtedly gorgeous, there are some things to keep in mind before you decide to go in with the bleach. Ahead is everything you need to know about the latest color trend, which has even been spotted on A-listers like Megan Fox, too.

So, What is Targaryen Blonde Hair?

According to Los Angeles-based colorist Ashleigh Marie, Targaryen Blonde is best described as “a bleach and tone that is a level 10 from roots to end.” Similarly, Lorena M. Valdes, a colorist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, describes this striking blonde-silver hue as having a “minimal warmth to it but still maintaining its brightness.”

How to Ask Your Stylist For Targaryen Blonde Hair?

To achieve Targaryen Blonde hair at the salon, Marie recommends asking your colorist for a “bleach and tone to a white blonde” Moreover, explains Valdes, “Double process or bleach and tone appointments will be needed if you want them to do it to your hair.” As such, she recommends booking a consultation ahead of time to make sure you will be able to achieve this color.

With all of this in mind, Melissa Dwyer, a colorist at FEKKAI salon at The Mark Hotel in New York City, recommends being upfront with your stylist by “communicating that you want to stay away from unwanted golden tones that the hair will try to naturally pick up.”

Tips For Maintaining Targaryen Blonde Hair

While Targaryen Blonde hair is stunning, it’s anything but low-maintenance. According to Marie, “This color is extremely high maintenance and professional hair care products are essential to maintain this color.” With this in mind, you’ll also want to consider your budget: “Know it will be a lot of maintenance time and money to maintain its health,” says Valdes.

Speaking of maintenance, Marie recommends touch-ups every three to five weeks for bleach and toning. Valdes, on the other hand, suggests root care every four to six weeks. However, she notes that glosses and glazes may be needed  in-between appointments to “maintain the color on the rest of the hair.” She also recommends regular trims and haircuts, plus purple shampoo and protein and moisture treatments. Both pros also recommend using heat protectants, which, per Marie, is crucial to “minimize heat damage to already-fragile hair.”

Dwyer also stresses the importance of using the correct products at home to help “maintain and keep the longevity of the icy-cool locks.” She continues, telling The Tease, “I cannot stress enough that home care and proper product use are essential for healthy hair.”

Targaryen Blonde Hair Do’s and Don’ts

We’re taking things a step further by breaking down the biggest do’s and don’ts to keep in mind before deciding on Targaryen Blonde hair, according to Valdes.

Do’s:

Consider trying a wig first if you see yourself doing this just once.
Keep in mind that it takes time and money to maintain the health of hair.
