Style Hair With TLC

These tips and techniques can help keep your strands healthy on Hair Day and beyond.

Choose Gentler Tools

The next generation of hot tools feature technology to minimize damage. The Trademark Beauty Sunny Styler ($89, CVS), a styling iron that both straightens and curls, "has vents that cool hair during styling to reduce damage," says Raven Hurtado, a stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago. "They also increase shine and set the style."

Skip The Heat

Heatless curls are nothing new (hello, Velcro rollers!), but they get new life with viral sensation of "sock curls." "There is no heat damage, so it's a gentler way to achieve curls," Hurtado says. Wrap damp hair around the "socks" for a few hours or overnight, then remove them and tousle curls with finters. WD LOVES: Kitsch Satin Heatless Curling Set, $18, ulta.com.

Spray Your Hair First

If you can't avoid using a hot tool, shield strands from damage and breakage by applying a heat-protectant styling product beforehand. "It creates a barrier against the heat and acts as a protective layer, preventing damaged or fried strands," Hurtado explains. Loosen up your UPDO

Forgo tight styles that can be rough on strands. "A healthier way to style your hair is in a loose low bun or loose braids," Hurtado says. "There's no tension on the hair that can lead to breakage." Opt for silk or satin scrunchies rather than elastic bands, as "they don't dent or break hair," she notes. WD LOVES: Slip Pure Silk Skinny Scrunchies, $29 for four, Nordstrom
