Boy meets girl. Gender bending. Sexual ambiguity. All were inspiration for the Cosmetologists Chicago 2012-13 Photo Trend Team as they created the Androge collection for 2013.

“Nothing shows off an androgynous look better than black and white photography,” says Karen Gordon, co-director of the team, treasurer of Cosmetologists Chicago and co-owner of Chicago’s J. Gordon Designs salon. “The starkness of black and white emphasizes the lines of the hair cut as well as the strength of the make-up and gender-bending fashion.”

These androgynous looks are a marriage of the latest fashion with the most current trends in cutting, hair coloring and styling.

Style and Structure :: Androge pushes the boundaries of style while being practical for today's salon client. The looks focus on boyish "over the ears" finishes, with deep side parts.

Shape and Silhouette :: The CC team says a part beginning near the crown of the head emphasizes facial features and is a fast and easy way to add a masculine feeling to an otherwise feminine style.

Movement and Texture :: Conscious of the fact that not every client desires a dramatic short cut, the team exposed two gender-mixing techniques to long hair by adding texture. For fine blonde hair, a twist in back and forward-moving curl texture in front suggests androgyny merged with the '50s.

Close and Cropped :: This look represents a masculine cut that can be worn by a female, or a feminine cut that can be worn by a male.
