Fall hair tips - hint: Bobby pins are big

The weather, the fashion, and oh, the HAIR! Stylist Dani Haulflaire from Chicago-based Maxine Salon has some tips on fall's hottest styles from baby bangs to beehives to the one accessory you should never leave home without.

Start Fall Off with a Bang!
One of the best things about fall weather? No more having to mess around with keeping your hair off your face—yes, the end of the oh-so-dreaded sticky bangs. For Haulflaire, that means trying out a light fringe. Perhaps something parted and soft, a la Bridgitte Bardot, or the somewhat more daring (yet oddly demure) baby bangs.

They come in pretty much every era and style, so take your pick: the Audrey Hepburn, the Amelie, etc. While lovely in stylized, retro cuts, Haulflaire also loves them in the more “distressed but elegant” looks she’s been seeing lately. A bit disheveled, a bit layered, a la AllSaints, for example.

The Luxe Beehive
As far as styles and textures go, this fall we’re really running the gamut. According to Haulflaire, one done-up look worth reinventing is the beehive. It’s a classic that's easily modernized with some texture and accessories, and/or bringing down the height a bit from what you might be picturing now.

Don’t Leave Home Without: Bobby Pins
“For fall, you need bobby pins,” says Haulflaire. “Never go anywhere without bobby pins in your pocket!” They’re a must-have whether you’re securing your hair into a low, horizontal updo, or pinning in a little bling: “Try adding jewels and brooches onto your actual bun,” says Haulflaire.

From soft crimping and retro waves to a bit of braiding (which is, yes, still going very strong), even the most subtle details can make a look, especially when teamed with varying levels of volume.

That said, “Nothing needs to be super-tight, especially when it comes to headbands and scarves,” says Haulflaire. Some teasing and a headband, in any width, is still an amazing look this fall, according to Haulflaire—and is perfect for the day before you shampoo!
