“Jellyfish Hair”: What’s behind the trendy layered cut for 2025 that all the stars are loving right now?

The “Jellyfish Haircut” is the next evolution of experimental shags – and definitely an extreme layered haircut. Stars like Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus already wear it. This is what’s behind it

The "Jellyfish Haircut" is the trendy hairstyle that all the stars love right now

At the 2025 Grammys, we saw one hairstyle noticeably often on the red carpet: the "jellyfish haircut," which, like its namesake, the jellyfish, is a variation of a heavily layered haircut with extreme differences in length. Miley Cyrus wore her highlighted hair in two layers at the awards ceremony , Billie Eilish followed suit, and Lady Gaga even combined the cut with a micro-bang . The 2025 Grammys clearly show: The "jellyfish haircut" is THE extravagant trend hairstyle of the year - and can look so good. You can find out everything you need to know about it here.

Layered cut: This is what the “Jellyfish Haircut” looks like

"It's a half short, half long mullet style ," says Raven Hurtado , stylist at Maxine Salon , of the "jellyfish haircut," adding that its asymmetrical aesthetic makes it basically two haircuts in one. "This layered cut is made up of separate sections, with the top part being very short while the bottom part is long and textured," she explains. The top part is reminiscent of a short bob or bowl cut, while the bottom part is left long. Why the haircut resembles a jellyfish? The long layers are reminiscent of tentacles, hence the name.

The "Jellyfish Haircut" is currently trending on TikTok and already has several billion views. The hairstyle is actually nothing new: It is inspired by the "Hime" (or princess) cut, which has its origins in the Japanese Heian period. Similar to the "Jellyfish Haircut", the "Hime" is also two-tiered and consists of blunt, bob-length fringes at the front and long strands at the back.

What the extreme layered haircut definitely isn't: a mullet. Dan Williams , stylist and salon owner at Studio Dan Williams , says the style is in a league of its own: "I wouldn't call this a mullet, it's definitely more avant-garde, and there's a lot less hair left longer," he tells Glamour , noting that the "jellyfish haircut" is an ideal choice for someone who wants to experiment with a short, blunt moment in the front while maintaining length in the back.

“Jellyfish Haircut”: What you need to consider

"If you're thinking about cutting your long hair into a bob , I would try the 'Jellyfish Haircut,'" he says, clarifying that the cut works on all hair types and textures because it's so customizable, "but it's definitely for a niche, artistic and experimental crowd."

"This look is trending because it's a gender-neutral style and it's very edgy, artistic and creative," Hurtado tells Glamour. "It's like having short and long hair at the same time," she says, adding, "This is a good option if you're not ready to cut your hair but want to try a different look."

“This cut is also perfect if you want to experiment with color to create a particularly bold, playful style,” she says.

Feeling inspired? For the jellyfish haircut, Hurtado recommends asking the stylist for short, rounded layers in the top hair while maintaining the length. As always, it's a good idea to bring photos for reference.

Once you have your jellyfish haircut, it's easy to maintain: "Most of the maintenance for this hairstyle is regular shaping of the front and sides," explains Williams. "The back 'tentacles' can grow as long as they want!"

Styling is super easy, too. Since the cut is so striking on its own, it doesn't take much to make a statement. Still, Williams recommends applying a texturizing product all over to enhance the style.

Hurtado echoes this recommendation, advising to scrunch the hair with your hands and fingers and then spraying on texture and volume spray to loosen it up even more. However, if you want your layers to stand out even more, she suggests using a small round brush, small curling iron or hot brush to highlight them.
