30 Burgundy Hair-Color Ideas to Try This Fall
The deep wine shade is the boldest take on red.
Shades of red are without a doubt having a moment, but burgundy hair color is the coolest, most daring take on the trend. Not for the faint of heart, it takes everything that makes red great—including that it’s eye-catching, flattering, and unique—and dials it up to 100. It also has a slight ’90s vibe (another of-the-moment trend) but still feels totally current thanks to the recent uptick in red shades. And if even the brightest of coppers feels too natural to you, burgundy is a guaranteed way to stand out from the crowd.
So what is burgundy hair color?
Also known as dark red hair color, burgundy hair “is a rich hue that blends deep red and purple tones, offering a bold, wine-like undertone that sets it apart from traditional browns or brunettes,” says Jennifer Korab, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Renaissance Salon & Spa. “Its versatility makes it suitable for a variety of skin tones—cooler burgundy shades pair beautifully with fair skin, balanced tones enhance medium skin, and warmer burgundy hues complement darker complexions.”
The best burgundy hair color for your skin tone
The best part about dark red hair color? It looks great on all skin tones. From Dove Cameron and Dua Lipa to Ho-yeon Jung and Cardi B, burgundy is universally flattering. “This color works on all skin types, from fair to deeper complexions, from straight hair to coils—this color is made for everyone,” Maxine Salon colorist Lauren Mildice previously told Glamour.
Finding the best burgundy hair color all comes down to your undertones. According to Shvonne Perkins, master colorist and lead educator at Madison Reed, an easy trick is taking a look at your makeup bag. “If you like violet lipsticks, blue eyeliners, and blackest-black mascara, you’ll likely look great in blue- and violet-based reds,” Perkins says. “If you tend to gravitate toward rosier looks with golden tones, brown to neutral shades, and orange hues in red lips, then a more copper-toned red will likely work better for you.”
How to get burgundy hair color
Good news! You can achieve burgundy hair color without bleaching. In fact, a brown or black hair base lends itself well to creating dark red hair color. “This deep, multidimensional color works especially well on brunettes or those with darker hair, adding warmth, depth, and an artistic flair,” says Korab. “Burgundy can be used in highlights, lowlights, or as an allover color to create eye-catching contrast and a glowing complexion.”
How to maintain burgundy hair color
While not quite as high-maintenance as other shades of red, burgundy hair color does come with its fair share of upkeep. “Maintaining the vibrancy of burgundy hair at home requires the right products,” Korab explains. “Use color-safe shampoos like Pureology Hydrate Shampoo to protect the richness of the hue and refresh the burgundy tones with Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask in Bordeaux. This will help keep the color vibrant between salon visits.”
Feeling inspired? From a subtle tint to full-on saturation, or somewhere in between like a cool ombré, there’s whole lotta ways to rock the trend—we rounded up 30 of them, to be exact. Scroll on for the coolest burgundy hair colors to try right now, for all hair types and textures.
Chocolate Burgundy
If your hair is naturally dark but you want to dabble in red hair color, chocolate cherry is the perfect way to combine the two. “It’s an alternative to auburn but still in the warm, reddish family,” says Jason Lee, hairstylist and founder of Mela & Kera. Lee describes the shade as adding a red wine undertone throughout brunette, which can also be accomplished through red highlights or balayage.
“For those of us who aren’t ready to take the full plunge into red, chocolate cherry seems to be a great way to update your look and make it modern but still live in the brunette world,” he says.
Burgundy Red
Want something more vibrant? If you have a warm undertone, celebrity stylist and Clairol brand partner Kim Kimble recommends burgundy shades with rich red undertones. A prime example of this look is the Dua Lipa shade seen here.
Taking the plunge is especially convenient if your hair is already brown or brunette, Kimble adds: “If your hair is naturally dark, you may not need to pre-lighten, as these shades show vibrantly on darker bases.”
Burgundy Balayage
“Burgundy offers countless styling options,” says Korab. One of her—and our—favorite unexpected ways to wear the look is with rich burgundy balayage, as seen on Priyanka Chopra Jonas. “Each variation of this color adds a personal twist to the trend, allowing for creativity and depth while keeping your hair vibrant and healthy,” Korab adds.
Burgundy Plum
Alternatively, if you have a cooler skin tone (or feel like you tend to look better in silver jewelry than gold), Kimble suggests trying plum or violet.
“Cool skin tones pair well with burgundy shades that have plum or violet undertones,” she says. “For a daring shade of red with strong purple undertones, Clairol Natural Instincts 4RV Dark Burgundy Hair is your go-to.”
Burgundy Cherry
According to Stephanie Angelone, master stylist at RPZL Hair Extension & Blowout Bar in New York, we can expect to see a whole lot of burgundy cherry hair colors in the new year.
“Red is such a universal color and looks good on any skin tone. Many celebrities have dyed their hair red over the last couple years, like Kendall Jenner and Megan Fox,” she says. “If you’re looking for the perfect red shade of extensions, try RPZL’s Jackie O Red 30-inch clip-ins.”
Burgundy Gloss
If you identify as a “lazy hot girl” when it comes to hair-color upkeep, you might want to consider a burgundy gloss.
“I like glosses for everyone, but mostly for people who don’t want to, or aren’t quite ready to, fully commit,” says Jenna Perry, celebrity colorist and owner of Jenna Perry Hair. “Glosses are not permanent, there is no damage to the hair, and they add shine and depth. It’s also good for in-between coloring and for refreshes—it stretches the longevity.”
Eggplant Burgundy
If you want to go even bolder, a full-on purple eggplant burgundy can look super cool. Kimble suggests the shade for people with cooler skin tones. “For textured hair, Clairol Bold & Bright BR4 Fruits of the Forest is a great choice,” she says.
Brunette Burgundy
If you have naturally dark hair and little time (or interest) in extensive maintenance, you might want to consider a brunette take on burgundy. “The burgundy shade blends beautifully with natural brunettes, requiring less lightening or damage compared to lighter hair colors,” says Kimble. “It also adds depth and dimension to dark hair.”
Red Wine Burgundy
Another burgundy hair color that’s skyrocketing in popularity? Red wine burgundy. “Mary J. Blige is a perfect example of the red wine burgundy trend; she often wears this rich, bold hue that exudes sophistication and confidence—a stunning choice for making a statement this season,” says Kimble. “For a daring shade of red with strong purple undertones, Clairol Natural Instincts 4RV Dark Burgundy Hair should be your pick.”
Hint of Red
If you’re not ready to go fully into red territory, a dark auburn gloss warms up shades of brown hair for a pretty red tint.
Classic Burgundy
This color on Rihanna is burgundy in its truest form—bright, bold, and equal parts red and violet based. It looks so cool paired with this shorter cut and a matching lipstick shade.
Bright Burgundy
This take on the shade somehow feels soft and adventurous at the same time—and is so pretty.
Burgundy Spirals
Burgundy looks beautiful on any hair texture, but the deep shade particularly makes curls pop.
Touch of Red
A brown shade with warm undertones can be just as impactful as going super red.
Dark Auburn
Ciara’s dark auburn hair is so lovely. Since it has a brown base (not a violet one), it’s a little easier to pull off than a classic dark burgundy hair color but has just as much verve.
Deep Red
Take your red just past the limits of “natural” for a shade that pops but still feels sophisticated and cool.
Burgundy Melt
Have your colorist add highlights of various lightness before going in with the wine shade for a result that is extra dimensional and varied.
Cinnamon Swirl
For red-brown hair like Justine Skye’s, ask your colorist for subtle highlights before going in with a soft red gloss. The result is a blended, natural shade of brown with warm burgundy tones.
Cranberry Red
Deep bright red looks killer paired with braids or locs, as demonstrated here by Keke Palmer.
Flannel Hair
Brown says to think of this shade like cinnamon: “It’s more of a brown red for those who don’t want to commit to a bright vibrant red but want to try a warmer color.” What sets flannel hair apart is the fact that there’s variation throughout. “Weaving in multiple tones in the flannel shades is what makes this look current and modern,” says celebrity colorist George Papanikolas. “It should be blended, dimensional, and in the red-orange-violet family.”
Burgundy Afro
SZA’s light burgundy hair color pairs perfectly with her fluffed-out curls.
Fiery Auburn
For even more punch, add a little more red to a classic burgundy shade. The result is this fiery shade somewhere between burgundy and auburn.
Deep Ruby
Stephanie Brown, a colorist at IGK Soho, predicts that Zendaya’s toned-down red will be on trend for the season ahead. She says the key to getting it right is the lived-in feel. “It’s darker at the root with brunette undertones,” she says, “so it doesn’t come across as a fashion color, meaning it’s wearable for everyday.”
Red Velvet
Make like Kylie Jenner and match a deep red hair color to a wine-toned outfit.
Major Burgundy
Gigi Hadid made waves when she stepped on the 2021 Met Gala red carpet with a brand-new deep burgundy shade. The best way to achieve a similar color is by working with your stylist to find the best dark red hair dye for you.
Sangria Spice
If you really want to get noticed, go for a deep wine hair color. Colorist Guy Tang says the key to maintaining a shade this vibrant is washing it as little as possible and using a sulfate-free shampoo when you do.
Auburn Pops
Shades of red are clearly a standout trend, but if you don’t want to go all the way, consider having your stylist weave some red pieces into your base shade. “Shades of auburn mixed throughout really give the hair some subtle pop,” says Jamila Powell, founder of Miami’s Maggie Rose Salon. “I love anything two-toned because it gives amazing dimension throughout your hair.” She suggests this look for warmer-toned brunettes who are going for a small change.
Burgundy Ombré
An ombré burgundy is such a cool way to wear the trend. The darker roots and sheer wash of color makes an otherwise intense shade feel easy-breezy.
Mulled Wine
Inspired by its namesake drink, mulled wine hair has swirls of berrylike violet for a super-rich shade.
Deep Plum
A wash of jammy red over deep brown hair results in the prettiest subtle plum burgundy hair color—it’s especially gorgeous when the sun hits it just right.
