17 Short Hair Ideas for Fall—From Soft Pixies to Shaggy Lobs
As the season changes, so does our hair.
Short hair dominated the summer, with celebs from Sofia Richie Grainge to Keke Palmer taking the plunge and getting bob haircuts. Now, with fall on the way, what short hairstyles will we continue to see as we welcome in cooler, crisper weather? To get the lowdown, we spoke with three hairstylists: Dimitris Giannetos, Mia Santiago, and Sanda Petrut.
After such a strong run during the warmer months, the stylists share that bobs won't be going anywhere: In fact, expect to see more variations of bobs come autumn, including growing out bobs into lobs (long bobs!), tons of textured and tousled looks, and more. Aside from bobs, other trending hair looks to keep an eye out for will be pixies, shags, and face-framing layers.
If you're ready for a change and looking to embrace some short hair ideas for fall, read on for our 17 favorite options, all approved by hairstylists.
Meet the Experts
- Dimitris Giannetos is a celebrity hairstylist and colorist in Los Angeles, New York, and Paris.
- Mia Santiago is a celebrity hairstylist in New York City and Ohio.
- Sanda Petrut is a stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago.
French Bob
Bobs are the talk of the town this year, but how will they evolve this season? We'll be seeing more French bobs, all three stylists confirm. It's a "timeless, chin-grazing cut that feels très chic," says Giannetos. Though a French bob has leaned more blunt in seasons past, "This fall, we'll see it styled with a bit of undone texture for a soft, romantic look," he says, as seen on Megan Fox.
As for styling, "You can get away with tucking it behind the ears and letting it air dry or diffused on low heat, and finish it with a little hairspray," says Petrut.
Soft Pixie
Pixies will take on a softer look this season, with a noticeable difference being "longer layers at the crown," says Giannetos. Remember that "short hair shows growth faster than long hair," says Santiago. To keep the cut looking sharp, shaggier cuts like this one can be trimmed every six to eight weeks, she recommends.
Cropped Curls
Lean into your natural texture with a cropped curly cut featuring tapered sides. Petrut calls the style "bold, confident and timeless," adding that "maintenance is a breeze" with this cut.
Shaggy Fringe
Shags are popular among celebrities and those seeking a low-maintenance cut. You can wear it short, like a tousled pixie, or longer, like Daisy Edgar-Jones does here. The key is to ensure you're incorporating texture and volume, says Santiago, so consider finishing your style with a bit of texturizing spray for added oomph. "It's effortless, edgy, and easy to style with just a bit of product," Santiago says.
Soft Pixie
Pixie cuts don't have to be harsh or hard to grow out. Expect to see softer crops this fall, say Giannetos and Santiago, à la Emma Stone. "Think Mia Farrow–inspired, but modernized," Santiago says. "Clean, polished, and minimalistic for the 'quiet luxury' vibe."
Shaggy Lob
A longer bob with choppy layers? Perfect for a windswept autumnal look. A cut like Eva Longoria's will "bring volume and movement [to your hair]," says Giannetos.
Italian Bob
French bobs won't be the only European-inspired short cut we'll see as the weather cools down. The more textured, thicker Italian bob will also be popular this season, according to all three stylists. It's a "heavier bob that hits at the jawline or just below, styled sleek and glossy," says Santiago. "It's luxurious and pairs well with bold lips and coats." Perfect for fall!
The Mixie
Never heard of a mixie? Have no fear: It's simply a "mix between a pixie and a mullet," says Santiago. It's "cool, playful, and already trending with younger celebs," she says, so if you're feeling like a bold hair change, this one's for you.
Blunt Faux Loc Lob
If you want to get in on the bob trend but aren't ready to commit to a chin-length cut, a lob will answer the call. It "grazes the collarbone with a sharp edge," says Santiago. "It's universally flattering and perfect for clients not ready to go too short." Ciara rocks a faux loc lob here.
Flippy Bob
Flipped bobs are one of the most fun (yet still polished!) ways to style your hair this fall, and they go very nicely with a turtleneck. They're "a nostalgic nod to the ‘90s and early 2000s," says Giannetos. "This style features ends turned outward for a playful, fashion-forward edge." He recommends styling it using a heat protectant spray followed by a flat iron "to create that perfect flip."
The Bixie
With bobs and pixies both so loved this year, it comes as no surprise that the bixie (bob meets pixie) will continue to trend this fall. "It's playful, versatile, and works well with natural texture," says Giannetos, who recommends styling with a hair putty to define layers without weighing hair down.
Cropped Bangs
A cropped cut with bangs, like Dixie D'Amelio's, is a fashion-forward look for fall. Giannetos is on board with any length bangs, from micro bangs to curtain bangs, this season. He recommends styling with a volumizing mousse "for lift and control," he says.
Modern Bowl Cut
Stay with us on this one: Bowl cuts are back and better than ever, and they're full of sophistication. The style is "rounded yet undercut at the nape," says Petrut, who notes this is a bold cut for fashion-forward risk-takers. "The hair should be blown straight and super shiny," she says. "Add a texture spray at the end to create a little movement and texture."
Voluminous Face-Framing Curls
Face-framing bangs and cuts are set to remain a go-to look this fall. "The haircut is sculpted to enhance curl pattern and add airiness and bounce by texturizing it," says Petrut. "Face framing will open up the face and accentuate features, and at the same time will remove bulk." To style, she prefers using a cream-based product "that enhances and softens the curls," before diffusing or air drying the hair.
Wet-Look Pixie
With slicked-back styles remaining popular this fall, the closely related wet-look hairstyle is also one to watch. Petrut likes it for nights out and advises using "a gel and shine serum to create a sleek, high-fashion finish."
Accessorized Hair
If you like to keep your short cut simple, Petrut says to lean into the accessories to dress things up this fall. Whether you have a simple blunt bob or a layered lob, "Make a statement by pairing it with headbands or hair jewelry," she says. Santiago echoes the sentiment: "Headbands, clips, and statement earrings stand out more with shorter cuts," she adds.
Slicked-Back Shine
Incorporating slicked-back styles is a way to show off shine and shape this fall. "Short hair reflects light beautifully when healthy," says Giannetos. "Always use a lightweight shampoo and conditioner and don’t underestimate shine sprays or lightweight serums to enhance the finish."
