Would You Try a Twisty Top Knot?

By Jennifer Cress

Who knew Cindy Lou Who would be a trendsetter in 2012?

Kelly Osbourne, Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian all have recently stepped out sporting a high, twisty top knot that immediately gave us flashbacks to the famous Dr. Seuss character.

The spool-like ‘do was first spotted on Osbourne during New York Fashion Week, when she took the hairstyle to the highest extremes — literally. Then just a few days later, Richie sported a mini boho version during a Good Morning America appearance. And earlier this week while promoting her hit show Down Under, Kardashian rocked a similar style, but hers was a tad thicker and more polished.

No matter how you decide to interpret the look, it’s going to be seriously head-turning — ideally in a good way. So we asked Adrianne Johnston, hairstylist at Maxine salon in Chicago, for advice on how to master the statement style at home. To get started, you’ll need hairspray, an elastic hair tie, a few bobby pins and a cushion brush. “Start at the nape and then brush your hair smooth into a high pony,” Johnston tells PEOPLE. “Next, wrap the hair into a knot or twist until it coils into the shape you want and secure it with pins along the way. Then finish off with hairspray.”

Though we are officially labeling this a “Proceed with Caution” hairdo, it looks like the trend is here to stay — at least for a little while. “It’s an easy style to master, but it also has an edge,” Johnston explains. “And it’s a chic substitute for your two- or three-day old hairstyle.”
