These Hair Color Trends Will Be Everywhere In 2023
New year, new hair! January 1st marks the chance to start anew: career-wise, relationship-wise, or image-wise. If there’s something you just weren’t feeling the last few months, in regards to your hair – or your overall well-being – there’s never been a better time to say “see you!” to the past and hello to the future.
Being the beauty-obsessed creatures of habit that we are, we wholeheartedly embrace switching it up every now and then… especially in the hair color department. Beauty is a form of expression, after all, and our hair hue is just one of the many ways we like to make a statement. So, without further ado, six master colorists sound off on the hottest hair color trends of 2023, from Brownie Batter locks to Barbiecore tresses.
2023 Hair Color Trend #1: Brownie Batter
“One of the top hair color trends we’re seeing for 2023 is Brownie Batter, a rich brunette with fine highlights of caramel or beige, as seen on Camila Cabello,” explains Garnier’s Celebrity Colorist Nikki Lee. “This is great for someone with a dark natural color that wants a bit of dimension and richness.
2023 Hair Color Trend #2: Tiramisu Blonde
“We also expect to see lots of Tiramisu Blonde, which is a warm blonde with a rich rooted base, like I did on Emma Roberts,” says Lee. “This is great for all the blondies that want to go a little more on the natural side.” To maintain fresh AF color at home, she recommends using Garnier Nutrisse Color Reviver 5 Minute Nourishing Color Mask, $8, in between color appointments. “There’s a shade for every hair color.”
2023 Hair Color Trend #3: Barbiecore Pink
Just in case you were wondering, Barbiecore isn’t going anywhere. Case in point: baddie Lizzo, who is proving power pink will be the IT color for the new year. “If you’re looking for something a bit more daring and bright, try the #Barbiecore trend, which you guessed it, leans into everything girly, pink, and Barbie,” says Jamie Mazzei, Creative Director for NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, NY.
“One of the signature looks of this trend is pink hair, either in a pretty pastel pink or a vibrant fuchsia. Decide which side of the pink spectrum you want to be on, and then ask your colorist to match your preferred pink. If you have blond hair, it’s a simple process of adding a gorgeous pink hue. If you have darker hair and you want the pink to pop, your stylist may need to bleach your hair first to ensure the pink pops. Or, you can add pink to darker hair for a more subtle pink.”
Be forewarned, though: Pinks require a lot of home maintenance to stay bright. Mazzei suggests keeping your mane vibrant with a color-depositing shampoo and conditioner, like Celeb Luxury Viral Hair – Colorwash, $35, in Pastel Link Pink, and Celeb Luxury Viral Hair – Colorditioner, $35, in Pastel Light Pink. “It’s a semi-permanent direct dye that’s a glaze right in your shower and will keep your pink nice and bright.”
2023 Hair Color Trend #4: Mushroom Bronde
According to Chelsea Callaghan, Senior Colorist at Hopscotch Salon in Greenwich, CT, Mushroom Brondes a là Taylor Swift will be taking over our feeds in 2023. “This trend is somewhere between blonde and brunette, but definitely on the cooler side, she shares. “It’s also great for the winter, once summer tans have faded, but it works for any skin tone and hair texture.”
Callaghan’s pick to keep this sensational shroom hue looking its best: purple shampoo, like Kérastase Blond Absolu Anti-Brass Purple Shampoo, $38. “Mix a little into your normal shampoo to maintain the cooler shades once you leave the salon.”
2023 Hair Color Trend #5: Midnight Onyx
Channeling gothic academic vibes in the new year? That’s so Wednesday Addams of you. “Midnight Oynx is a rich black shade with extra shine treatments for it to look as if it were reflective,” explains Lorena M. Valdes, Colorist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, IL. “We’re definitely seeing more requests for this inky hue after Netflix’s popular show Wednesday.”
To get the look, Valdes recommends asking your colorist for all-over color from roots to ends. “Malibu C treatments are great to remove any build-up that clings to dull/greasy hair,” she adds.
2023 Hair Color Trend #6: Autumn Rouge
Valdes is also loving copper to transition from the fall into the new year. “An intense copper with auburn roots will be a head-turner,” she says. “Ask your colorist for balayage or highlights to create dimension on the ends.”
2023 Hair Color Trend #7: Caramel Frappuccino
If you’re not ordering your hair color like a Starbucks drink in 2023, are you even living your life right? “For the new year, we’re seeing a warm winter trend – instead of cool tones, more and more clients are opting for golden honey tones and caramel blonde on chocolate brown hair,” says Jerome Lordet, Salon and Style Director at Pierre Michel Salon in NYC.
“This is a natural fit for medium-to-dark brown natural hair tones, as it’s very easy to enhance the color that’s already there with warm, subtle highlights.” Both Hailey Bieber and Olivia Wilde are perfect examples of this color trend, and to preserve those golden-brown strands, Lordet prescribes a routine of a shampoo two or three times a week and touch-ups every one to two cuts. “The goal is to have the highlights look blended into the length of the hair.”
