From Spiky Buns to Velvet Nails, Here are 16 Beauty Trends That Will be Everywhere in 2023

We’re looking forward to a new year and with it, some fresh new beauty ideas to revamp our look and daily routine. To get ahead of the curve, we consulted experts and dove deep into industry data to identify the top 2023 beauty trends we’ll be seeing everywhere. From the haircut that’s on the rise to the skincare ingredient that everyone will be talking about, here are 16 beauty trends that will shape the year ahead.

HAIR

1. Updos

2023 will mark the return of the updo. “For the last few years, we have seen lots of loose waves and hair that’s tucked behind the ears on the red carpet. Any of the updos we did see were simple buns or sleek chignons, but we’re starting to see bigger, more intricate styles take over,” says Joseph Maine, a celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Trademark Beauty. “Think along the lines of tousled Pam Anderson topknots and sculptural updos, including finger waves,” he adds.

2. Spiky Bun

Speaking of updos, another style that we’ll see more of in 2023 is the spiky bun. Driven by the surge of ‘90s and early 2000s nostalgia, this easy-to-recreate high bun is purposefully undone. Just don’t forget to leave out the signature face-framing tendrils to complete the look.

3. Hybrid Colors

“Hybrid color is multifaceted, so you get a different look with every turn of the head,” explains Jamie Mazzei, creative director for NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, New York. “You can get the look by keeping a strong base color and asking your stylist to add pops of a slightly lighter tone throughout. Then, you’ll want them to gloss it all over in the lighter tone to give the overall effect of looking lit from within,” he adds.

4. Gemini Hair

According to Pinterest searches, two-toned tresses are going to be big in 2023. Some popular color combinations we’ll be seeing include blue and black, lavender and blonde, pink and lavender, and brown and pink. No matter the hue, the key to nailing this rising trend is to keep the overall look grounded in a natural base color (which also makes the brighter color pop).

5. Side Parts

ICYMI: The side bang is definitely making a comeback in 2023. And celebrity hairstylist and Virtue ambassador Xavier Velasquez agrees. “Just as fashion goes through cycles, so does hair styles. With trends continuing to lean towards the early 2000s, I’m predicting a return of the side part,” he adds.

6. Bottleneck Bangs

Bottleneck bangs are being touted as the next (and even better) curtain bang. In fact, our very own assistant editor recently got them and says she may never go back. “To get your bangs just right, ask for the shortest piece to be in the middle, typically right at the brow or slightly below it, with longer pieces towards the cheekbones,” advises Raven Hurtado, a stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago. “The ends should be curved in and texturized for a lighter feel and movement to them,” she adds.

7. Flippy Bob

Bobs have been trending for a while now, and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere in 2023. If anything, we’ll be seeing subtle updates to the classic cut by adding the aforementioned side part and flipped out ends. “To achieve this style, ask for a blunt cut above the shoulders. Your stylist should cut with your hair parted in the middle. That way when you wear it to one side, both sides will be symmetrical,” shares Hurtado.

8. Butterfly Haircut

The butterfly haircut combines long and short layers to create dimension, movement and body throughout your hair. The shorter, wispier layers hit right at the chin and jawline to frame your face and the longer layers allow you to keep the overall length. All of this to say, it’s no wonder why the butterfly cut is so popular.

SKIN

9. Plant-Based Alternatives

“More people are starting to look for skincare products that use natural ingredients and extracts to deliver results,” shares Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist in New York. “Ingredients like bakuchiol continues to be of interest and is being incorporated into more products as a natural retinol alternative. Another ingredient I’m seeing on the rise and incorporated into more products is snow mushroom,” she says. Whereas bakuchiol targets fine lines and hyperpigmentation, snow mushroom works as a humectant, drawing in water so you get a plumper complexion.

10. Chebula

Another ingredient on the rise? Chebula, an Ayurvedic herb known as ‘the king of medicines’ for how rich it is in antioxidants. Stemming from a tiny little berry, Chebula is believed to regulate pigmentation and minimize inflammation in skin, so it’s smoother, brighter and stronger on the whole.

NAILS

11. Velvet Nails

Aka magnetic, chrome or cat eye nails. This mesmerizing mani is a global sensation right now (at least as it pertains to the nail world) because, well, look at it. The eye-catching effects are created using a special polish and a corresponding magnet that moves the polish into whatever pattern you want, giving your nails a multi-dimensional finish.

12. Micro French Manicures

In the new year, many Millennials and Gen Z’ers are trending toward shorter nails. Whereas longer tips in statement shapes (i.e, coffin or stiletto) were big in previous years, we’ll be seeing a shift in 2023, as more people opt for short, trim nails in simple designs like the mini French mani.

MAKEUP

13. Straight Brows

According to Jamie Long, lead brow stylist at HD Brows, we’ll be moving away from higher arches and toward a softer, straighter brow in the year ahead. “Many celebs have recreated the look recently, from Meghan Markle to Lily Collins and now Ariana Grande. To get the look, the tail of the brow is lifted slightly to open up the eyes and lift the face, which keeps the eyes looking youthful and fresh,” he explains.

14. Coquette Makeup

Coquette makeup is really a blend of several different trends, like balletcore and the soft grunge looks that were popular in the early 2010s. Think: Lana Del Ray-style eyeliner with a flush of soft pink blush that plays up your femininity.

15. Doe-Eyes

Another big makeup trend for 2023 is doe-eyed makeup (with a 122 percent increase in Google searches). Recreate the look by using dark eyeliner and adding a set of fluttery lashes that really open up your eyes and give them that cutesy, doll-like appearance.

16. Barbiecore

Ever since the first images of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie were released earlier this year, people have been buzzing about Margot Robbie’s transformation into the iconic doll. With the movie set to release in July, we can expect to see a lot of pretty pink makeup (and tons of glitter) in 2023.
