Butter Blonde Is the Perfect Transitional Blonde for Fall

Butter yellow nails have met their match.

Whether you’re a natural or bottle blonde, it’s hard to part with the head-turning color, but the same blonde that works well in the summer might not be the shade you want in the fall. We’ve heard whispers about meringue blonde, named for the sweet dessert confection, but we like to call it what it is—butter blonde. Think Sophie Turner, Diane Kruger and Reneé Rapp. That’s the energy and hair we want to bring into the new season.

What is butter blonde?

“This is a yellow golden honey blonde look that resembles a lemon meringue,” says celebrity colorist Cherise Wilson. “This look will warm up and brighten many complexions and will sparkle on camera, as golden tones really reflect light!” There’s a creaminess to the shade, adds colorist at Maxine Salon in Chicago Lauren Mildice.

It’s “a light blonde that features a mix of buttery, golden tones blended throughout, creating a look that balances delicate warm tones,” says vice president of color development at R+Color Richy Kandasamy. “This trend is perfect for anyone looking to add a sun-kissed warmth to their hair as the weather cools down, keeping that summer glow all year round,” says co-founder of IGK Hair Care Chase Kusero. “It’s a great transitional color that lightens up the fall palette.”

What to ask for in the salon to get the butter blonde look

Wilson recommends asking your colorist for “bright highlights that are still golden, not too white.” Also, “use a golden base break to lift and warm the rest of the hair to give it a sparkle and bring the base up to golden. Give it a light golden gloss to give it that meringue shine!”
