15 Best Shampoos for Frizzy Hair That Cleanse and Condition

These moisture-replenishing picks are great for thirsty strands.

The best shampoos for frizzy hair can make a world of difference for anyone trying to manage frizz and flyaways. Just take it from San Diego-based hairstylist and Phenix Salon Suites founder Gina Rivera, who tells Allure, "Shampoo is definitely the first item needed to combat the frizzies." However, finding the best products for your frizzy hair can feel overwhelming — especially if you're unsure where to start.

According to Shelly Aguirre, a hairstylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, frizzy hair is often dry, which is why it's essential to keep your hair moisturized. With this in mind, New York City-based hairstylist and colorist Paul Labrecque of Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa tells Allure that the best shampoos for frizzy hair are those that target dryness and contain "naturally moisturizing ingredients that will smooth the hair shaft but not overly weigh the hair down."

More specifically, you'll want to look for hair products that contain natural oils (such as argan and coconut, for example), shea butter, and aloe vera, all of which, per Labrecque, "help to smooth and tame frizz while gently hydrating and cleansing the hair." Conversely, every hair pro we spoke to advised steering clear of shampoos with sulfates, which can strip your strands of essential oils and dry them out (which, spoiler alert, is a big no-no when it comes to wrangling frizz.)

To help you find the best shampoos for frizzy hair, we've narrowed down the best options you can buy online. From beloved drugstore staples to splurge-worthy finds, here are some of our favorites for glossy, healthy hair.

Best Overall: Redken Frizz Dismiss Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: According to Los Angeles-based hairstylist Bradley Leake, Redken's Frizz Dismiss Shampoo is an excellent choice for all hair types (including color-treated hair) and textures. The shampoo's sulfate- and sodium chloride-free formula is gentle but still creates a cushiony lather, so it'll wash away a day's worth of sweat and oil from your strands without over-stripping hair. To smooth the look of frizzy hair and flyaways, this shampoo is spiked with conditioning babassu oil, which leaves hair feeling smoother.

Who It's For: All hair types, color-treated hair | Key Ingredients: Babassu oil, | Scent: Coconut

Best Clarifying Shampoo: Ouai The Detox Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: A deep cleanse is necessary every now and then to effectively remove buildup, flakes, and excess oil. Ouai's The Detox Shampoo intensively cleanses your scalp and strands without over-stripping your hair of much-needed moisture in the process. The not-so-secret ingredient of this shampoo apple cider vinegar, a deep-cleansing additive that’s also known for its shine-boosting and moisturizing abilities

Who It's For: Flaky scalps, oily hair | Key Ingredients: Apple cider vinegar, keratin | Scent: Rose, bergamot, lychee, white musk, champagne

Best Affordable Shampoo: SheaMoisture All Day Frizz Control Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: At under $15 per 13-ounce bottle, SheaMoisture's Frizz Control Shampoo is a budget-savvy pick for curly and wavy hair, in particular. Its dense formulation features a slew of moisture-replenishing ingredients, but the ones worth calling out include hydrating glycerin, mosturizing shea butter, and aloe vera, which is also known for its soothing properties (a bonus for sensitive scalps). It's also worth noting that this shampoo has a sulfate-free formula, making it gentle enough for dry or damaged hair, as well.

Who It's For: Curly hair, wavy hair, textured hair | Key Ingredients: Glycerin, shea butter, aloe vera extract | Scent: Papaya and neroli

Best Shampoo for Color-Treated Hair: Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Like many of the shampoos on this list, the Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo is a paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo, but it's our favorite for bleached and color-treated hair because it's formulated to enhance color rather than just preserve it. As you lather this creamy wash into your hair, jojoba esters moisturize and boost shine while the brand's proprietary amino cleansing complex provides a deep yet gentle cleanse without washing expensive color treatments down the drain like sulfates do. But the real star of the show is marine algae extraxct, which is rich in antioxidants that'll boost shine and vibrancy while protecting color-treated hair against damaging environmental aggressors.

Who It's For: Color-treated hair | Key Ingredients: jojoba esters, amino acids, marine algae extract | Scent: Citrus blend

Best Bond-Repairing Shampoo: Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: To keep frizzy hair at bay, Labrecque reaches for Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo. Like all of Olaplex's products, this Allure Best of Beauty-winning shampoo won all of our editors over for its lightweight formulation that cleanses hair while making it feel smoother, stronger, and softer after every wash. It's formulated with the brand's signature ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, to help strengthen hair bonds and smooth hair, reducing frizziness and split end-inducing breakage in the process. "If hair bonds are reunited and built-up, the hair is less apt to break and be or become frizzy," Labrecque says.

Who It's For: Damaged hair, color-treated hair | Key Ingredients: Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate | Scent: Honey

Best Shampoo for Thick Hair: Aveda Smooth Infusion Anti-Frizz Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: The Aveda Smooth Infusion Anti-Frizz Shampoo might be too moisturizing for thin hair, but thicker hair textures will especially enjoy its custardy, conditioning formula. This pick provides all of the flake-reducing cleansing powers you want from your shampoo while going above and beyond with its ultra-moisturizing, rich formulation that ensures frizz is at an all-time minimum. The not-so-secret sauce to this hair-care product is a blend of kalahari melon seed and tamanu oils, both of which are high in cuticle-smoothing fatty acids.

Who It's For: Thick hair | Key Ingredients: Kalahari melon seed oil, tamanu oil | Scent: Sandalwood, bergamot, palmarosa

Best Shampoo for Curly Hair: Rizos Curls Hydrating Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Curly, thick hair types are especially prone to frizziness (sorry), and the Rizos Curls Hydrating Shampoo is here to help. Our editors love that this pick has a dense, gel-like texture that deeply cleanses your scalp and strands while moisturizing both with two stand-out ingredients: shea butter and moringa oil. If your bouncy curls are feeling a bit brittle, or if you're currently dealing with a flaky scalp, this shampoo is a must for your hair-care routine.

Who It's For: Curly hair, thick hair, textured hair | Key Ingredients: Shea butter, moringa oil | Scent: Lemon, lime, coconut milk, sandalwood

Best Shampoo for Dry Hair: JVN Nurture Hydrating Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: What's the not-so-secret ingredient that makes the JVN Nurture Hydrating Shampoo such an awesome frizz-reducer? Squalane, of course. If this ingredient's name sounds familiar, that's because it's a popular emollient that's added in countless skin-care products for its moisture-replenishing qualities — it's probably making an appearance in your skin-care collection right now. Along with this intensive conditioning additive, this formula also contains aloe vera for further frizz-reducing moisture.

Along with its milk-to-foam texture that feels oh-so good on the scalp, our team also loves this shampoo's scent, which features a mix of warm amber, woods, fruity apple, and musk.

Who It's For: Dry hair | Key Ingredients: Squalane, aloe vere extract | Scent: Amber, woods, apple, musk

Allure Best of Beauty-Winning Shampoo: Nécessaire The Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: You know a product lives up to its claims when it's an Allure Best of Beauty winner. Our team fell hard for the conditioning benefits of Nécessaire's The Shampoo. As it transforms from a cleanser-like gel texture to a barely-there lather, it cleanses the scalp of unwanted product buildup and dead skin with plant-based surfactants. To manage frizz and dryness, this formula provides a dose of hydrating hyaluronic acid that binds water to the surface layer of the scalp and hair shaft while niacinamide calms scalp irritation for an itch-free finish.

Who It's For: All hair types, sensitive skin | Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, penthenol | Scent: Fragrance-free

Best Oil-Based Shampoo: OGX Frizz-Free + Keratin Smoothing Oil Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Looking for a reliable drugstore find? OGX's Frizz-Free + Keratin Smoothing Oil Shampoo has you covered at a lower price tag than most shampoos on the market. This affordable find combines the hair-smoothing benefits of keratin with moisturizing ingredients like argan oil and ceramides to tackle dryness and minimize your frizziest strands.

As its name suggests, this is an oil-based shampoo, so expect it to feel slightly weightier on hair than most. With that being said, it's still suitable for finer hair types — just remember that less is more.

Who It's For: Thick hair, curly hair, textured hair | Key Ingredients: Keratin, argan oil, ceramides | Scent: Orange, pineapple, amber

Best Drugstore Shampoo: Garnier Whole Blends Frizz Control Nourishing Daily Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: You don't need to shell out a ton of cash to find a proper frizz-fighting shampoo like Garnier's Whole Blends Frizz Control Nourishing Daily Shampoo. It's a drugstore staple that clocks in at under $10 (or under $15, if you opt for the value pack). Its formula features a mix of moisture replenishers like coconut oil, cocoa butter, aloe, and glycerin, so you can expect its lightweight gel formula to make a major smoothing impact on your frizziest strands.

Who It's For: All hair types | Key Ingredients: Coconut oil, cocoa butter, aloe vera extract, glycerin | Scent: Coconut

Best Shine-Boosting Shampoo: Drybar Liquid Glass Smoothing Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Our editors love Drybar's Liquid Glass Smoothing Shampoo because it leaves hair smooth, shiny, and, most importantly, frizz-free, no matter your hair type. The cream-like formula — which is sulfate- and paraben-free — contains moisturizing heavy-hitters like murumuru butter and glycerin, yet it rinses away surprisingly quickly, so it's ideal for thick and fine hair types alike. The shampoo's signature scent, which has notes of coconut, amber, and vanilla, is enough to get us hooked, but keep reusing this product for the "liquid hair"-like results.

Who It's For: All hair types | Key Ingredients: Murumuru butter, glycerin | Scent: Coconut, amber, vanilla

Best Antioxidant-Rich Shampoo: Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair Super Moisture Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Just like its best-selling (and Allure Best of Beauty-winning) hair mask, the Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair Super Moisture Shampoo works overtime to restore smoothness and shine. Its gel-to-foam formula contains a nourishing blend of antioxidant-rich algae extract and conditioning rosehip oil to seal moisture into dry hair and minimize the look and brittle feel of frizz and flyaways. Its formula is definitely lighter in comparison to the rest of the conditioning products in the Don't Despair, Repair line, so if you're looking for intensively moisturizing results, we suggest pairing this pick with your favorite deep conditioner.

Who It's For: All hair types | Key Ingredients: Algae extract, rosehip oil | Scent: Florals, white musk, woods

Best Pre-Styling Shampoo: Mizani Press Agent Smoothing Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Leake is also a fan of the Mizani Press Agent Smoothing Shampoo for its frizz-fighting and smoothing properties. You won't spot sulfates in this ultra-lightweight formula, but what you will find is fatty acid-rich argan oil and moisturizing agave extract, both of which work hand in hand to smooth and soften frizz.

Though Mizani claims this shampoo contains UV filters to prep hair for heat styling, the brand doesn't provide much information on said filters. So, before you grab your straightener, we suggest prepping your hair after showering with a heat protectant spray to ensure your strands don't sizzle or become damaged.

Who It's For: Damaged hair, dry hair, color-treated hair | Key Ingredients: Argan oil, agave extract | Scent: Grapefruit, mandarin, jasmine, rose, freesia, musk, woods

Best Shampoo for Fine Hair: KeÌrastase Discipline Bain Fluidealiste Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: "The Discipline line from Kerastase is specifically designed for an anti-frizz regimen," says Aguirre. With this in mind, the stylist especially loves the Kérastase Bain Fluidealiste Shampoo for its lightweight, sulfate-free formula, which is formulated to smooth individual strands without weighing them down, so it's especially ideal for fine hair.

Strand-strengthening hydrolyzed wheat protein and hydration-boosting glycerin are two of the star ingredients in this formula, but a quick scan of its ingredient list will also show that exfoliating salicylic acid, which clarifies the scalp, also makes an appearance in KeÌrastase's shampoo.

Who It's For: Fine hair | Key Ingredients: Hydrolyzed wheat protein, glycerin, salicylic acid | Scent: Violet, petitgrain, iris, lily, rose, vanilla, sandalwood
