Forget the "Wolf Cut" — Introducing the "Wolflette" Haircut

The "wolf cut" took social media by storm with its textured, undone finish, combining the popular shag and a mullet. But if you were a little apprehensive to fully commit to the look, now's your chance to give it another shot with the "wolflette" haircut trend — a softer, more wearable version of the style.

The start of the new season is the perfect time to change up your look, and if you're looking to go big this summer and really lean into the free-spirited, playful feel that the warm weather brings, the "wolflette" may be the perfect thing for the job.

Keep reading ahead to learn more about the "wolflette" haircut from a stylist.

What Is the "Wolflette" Haircut?

The is similar to the "wolf cut" — not just in the name, but in the overall shape of the style, but it's decidedly different. "The 'wolflette,' or petite wolf, is a soft, feminine version of the popular 'wolf cut,'" Amy Abramite, creative director and stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, tells POPSUGAR. What sets it apart is the length of the layers. The original "wolf cut" has shorter, choppy bangs, whereas the "wolfette" features longer, face-framing pieces around the face instead.

"I've had requests for 'wolf cuts,' but without the feeling of a mullet," says Abramite. "They love the shaggy layers but want more length on the sides and the fringe."

At the salon, your stylist should focus on adding volumizing layers throughout your head for a "tousled, choppy effect mimicking shaggy animal fur," says Abramite. Be sure to ask your stylist for longer bangs that are seamlessly blended into the rest of the head.

The style works on all hair types but it's especially flatting on those with wavy and curly hair thanks to the natural texture and movement they allow for. Thin hair will find the style great for adding body and fullness, while thick hair can benefit from the ability to remove bulkiness through layers. "A thinning or texturizing scissor may be used to remove bulk for weightless lift," says Abramite.

How to Style a "Wolflette" Haircut

Styling the "wolflette" haircut is easy — especially if you have naturally wavy or curly hair. Start by massaging a styling cream into damp hair, like the Verb Ghost Air Dry Whip ($20) or the JVN Complete Hydrating Air Dry Hair Cream ($26). "Let hair air-dry to encourage natural texture," says Abramite. "Finish by misting a texture spray and finger styling to increase volume and enhance separation." For texture sprays, we like the Andrew Fitzsimons Après Sexe Texture Spray ($16) or the Amika Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray ($29).
